Yerba Mate - How to prepare traditional Yerba Mate

Get ready for the polo season and learn how to prepare Yerba Mate the traditional way...

There are many ways of preparing Yerba Mate, ranging from traditional methods to those using a coffee maker, tea filter or french press.

Here we will show you how to prepare Yerba Mate in the traditional Argentine way using the special cup, called a gourd (as seen above) and a traditional bombilla (a metal filtered straw that is used for drinking yerba mate).

Start by placing the yerba mate leaves into the gourd until the cup is around two-thirds full. Next. move the leaves over to one side so that there is an empty 'well-like' space in which to pour the water.

Now add just enough cold water to the space to moisten the yerba mate leaves and leave to site for a few minutes so that the leaves can absorb the water.

Finally add hot water to the empty space, allowing the leaves to brew in the water for around three minutes. The bombilla (metal straw) can then be used to sip the tea from the gourd. Additional water can be added and the process can be repeated as needed.

Help us support the next generation of polo players!

The Polera are passionate about polo and its development around the world. For polo to truly grow and develop as an international sport we need to continue to support the growth of polo and the development of its players.

For many, polo is a sport they discover at college or university and it is these college and university teams that often need your support the most as they often have little or no funding and rely on donations.

Vassar Polo Club, located in upstate New York, USA, is one such team that needs your support. Vassar Polo Club have had a long polo history, being the first collegiate women's team in the United States, back when Vassar was an all-girls school. However, due to budget constraints they are in desperate help with funding to keep their team up and running.

Unfortunately Vassar Polo team didn't have much of a presence in the past, the club was disbanded a long time ago and then restarted in 2001. Since then, they have had some trouble building up a team, however this year they have expanded the women's team as well as adding a men's team. They have also been expanding the interest in the sport on campus and alongside the local community.

They now need your support to keep their team up and running and continuing to build their presence in the sport and in their community. They are looking for donations and sponsorships so that they can continue playing this year, if you or your company can help sponsor them please contact them via their  website vassarpolo.wordpress.com . They are also looking for equipment donations: mallets, arena polo balls, helmets etc. If you wish to donate please contact them via their website or alternatively you can email our team thepolera@gmail.com for more information.

Please help us in supporting the next generation in polo.

Escorihuela Gascón win the second Fin del Mundo Snow Polo Cup 2011- Ushuaia, Southern Argentina

Four teams battled it out for the cup at the second Fin del Mundo Snow Polo tournament with the Argentine legend, Ernesto Trotz scoring the winning goal for his team Escorihuela Gascón.

The second Fin del Mundo Snow Polo Cup was played in the southern most city of the world  - Valle de Tierra Mayor, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina on Saturday 27 August 2011. The tournament consisted of six matches. There were four 10-goal mens teams playing for the “Copa Escorihuela Gascón” and two ladies teams playing for the “Copa Securitas”.

The first match was “Fueguino Hotel” (with three Brazilian players) winning against the young local team “HeliUshuaia” with 3 goals to 2, with a golden goal scored by Gustavo Rocha, which made his team the first finalist of the tournament.

The second match was “Escorihuela Gascón” with 4 goals scored by Argentine legend, Ernesto Trotz, winning against the “Tante Sara” team and taking the remaining place in the finals. The best player of the match went to Juan Badiola, a young Argentine who showed much promise.

The finals took place in the afternoon, as light snow began to fall. The final between Fueguino Hotel and Escorihuela Gascón had an exciting start. Ernesto Trotz scored two goals in the first few minutes of the match for his team, putting their opponents, the Brazilian team in a very difficult position. But the Brazilians knew how to come back and went on to score one goal to retain some dignity. However, Argentine legend Ernesto Trotz was unstoppable, showing great flair and skill he went on to score another final goal, giving his team a great victory - winning 3 goals to 1.

We are eagerly anticipating next year's tournament already and look forward to seeing you there. Fin del Mundo Snow Polo Cup 26-27 August 2011

We are very excited to announce our partnership with Invictus SnowPolo in the promotion and marketing of the best snow polo tournament in Argentina -Fin del Mundo Snow Polo Cup - 26-27 August 2011, Ushuaia, Argentina.

Start the snow polo season in style...

Come and start the snow polo season early in Argentina with the Fin del Mundo Snow Polo Cup. Held in Ushuaia, Southern Argentina, in the Tiero del Fuego region, Ushuaia is the
southern most city in the world, hence the aptly named title of 'End of the World' tournament.

The snow polo pitches are taken care of throughout the year, by a specialized ground staff with over 40 years of experience. This begins some months before competitive games take place, even before the first snowfall and continues throughout the snow season, using up-to-date machinery and taking into account the temperature variations to archive the correct solidity. This ensures the best conditions for the tournaments and allows the games to be played safely at a maximum speed, whist maintaining good pitch conditions throughout the season.

A great place to stay and visit...
Ushaia is the region's biggest tourist draw, home to some outstanding museums and a gateway to the natural spectacles of Canal Beagle and Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, as well as the ski resort of Cerro Gastor. A perfect place to come see some amazing snow polo and have a great holiday in a sublime landscape.
